What is Yoga Nidra, and why does it feel like sleep?

It's often called yogic sleep, but you're not quite asleep. Here's what's really happening when you lie down and listen.

The first time most people try Yoga Nidra, they say the same thing afterwards: “I don’t know where I went, but I feel wonderful.”

Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation you do lying down. My voice leads you gently through the body, the breath, and then feelings and thoughts. Somewhere along the way your body begins to rest more deeply than it usually can, while a small part of you stays aware.

Between waking and sleeping

That in-between state is the heart of the practice. Your muscles let go, your breathing slows and your nervous system shifts out of ‘get things done’ and into ‘rest and repair’. It’s why so many students tell me they sleep better on the nights they practise.

There’s nothing to get right. If you fall asleep, your body needed it.

Shaped by iRest

My teaching is shaped by iRest, a modern, evidence-based form of Yoga Nidra that has been studied for stress, sleep and resilience. It’s gentle, practical and suitable whether or not you’ve done any yoga or meditation before.

How to try it

Make yourself a Rest Nest: a mat or bed, a pillow under your knees, a blanket and something over your eyes. Then press play, and let yourself be guided. Your dog is welcome to join you.
